Fixing Roads and Bridges

By Rep. Brian Hill

Did you know that the maintenance of our Oklahoma roads and bridges are primarily funded by  the taxes you and I pay at gas pumps? According to data from the Oklahoma Tax Commission,  those taxes cost drivers 35 to 55 an average of $162 per year and drivers 65 and older $82 per  year, for an overall average of $130 per driver per year.

With the increased efficiencies of newer combustion cars and trucks, plus the projected increase  in alternative fuel vehicles, it is crucial for Oklahoma to identify alternative pathways to fund the  maintenance and growth of our roads and bridges.

With the signing by Gov. Kevin Stitt of House Bill 1712, also known as the Road User Task  Force Act, we are moving Oklahoma forward by identifying long-term solutions now for  tomorrow’s transportation needs.

Sen. John Haste and I were able to see this legislation cross the finish line, thanks to the  partnership of the Oklahoma Dept. of Transportation team, including Sec. Tim Gatz and  Administrator of Legislative Affairs Montie Smith, and industry leaders, including former Sec.  Gary Ridley, Sec. Mike Patterson and Mustang's former Mayor Jay Adams, as well as with the  support of our fellow members in the Legislature, including coauthors Reps. Avery Frix and Kyle  Hilbert.

Together, we are researching the solutions for tomorrow's road issues, identifying the right  answers for our state and building a stronger future for Oklahoma's families, businesses and  transportation needs.

If I can assist you or your family, please reach out to us at your House District 47 office at (405)  557-7333 or brian.hill@okhouse.gov. Together, we are building a strong future for our families  and all of Oklahoma.

Honored to serve, Brian
